Collection of drawings and watercolours of furniture and ornament projects made by Jean-Démosthène Dugourc, one of the creators of neo-classicism.

A fascinating document published by Mr. Anatole de Montaiglon in « Nouvelles Archives de l’Art français » (1877, p. 367 à 371) reveals to us the biography of this famous ornamentalist adulated by the great and powerful people under Louis XVI.

Founder of neo-classicism through his constant references to Antiquity, Dugourc was about to breathe innovative ideas into decorators, extend his field of investigation to very various areas by making suggestions to bronze makers (his project of chimney bronzes) as well as suggesting models to cabinetmakers (his projects of chairs, armchairs, bed, throne...) and by creating himself patterns of pure decoration.

His project of armchair illustrates Dugourc’s genius that intimately combined antique references in the lines or patterns, to very new subjects with leaf or animal themes inspired from nature.

A collection testifying of the creative imagination of the artist, talented inventor of neo-classicism and whose influence in decorative art would be of the utmost importance on the eve of the French revolution.
