2 parts bound in 2 volumes 8vo [156 x 98 mm] in full red morocco, triple gilt fillet around the covers, spines ribbed finely decorated, red morocco doublures with a thin gilt border, gilt edges, slipcases. Bindings signed by Cuzin.

Precious first edition, comprising the two first books.
Tchemerzine, IV, 870; Sayce, I ; P.M.M. n°95; En Français dans le texte n°73.

It was printed in Bordeaux by Montaigne and under his eyes.
Copy from the second issue, whose title-page bears the author’s name with his titles and qualities.

Montaigne’s first editions have seen their value strongly increasing in the past few years. The first edition of his French translation of La Théologie naturelle by Raymond Sebond printed in 1569, was knocked down for 218 000 € on June 5th 2007 (copy preserved in decorated and restored vellum) increasing then the value of the first edition of the Essays of 1580 above one million Euros in similar condition.
