Rare first edition, published without the name of the author. Tchemerzine, III, p. 894; Rochebilière, p.104, n° 191; Rochambeau, p.574, n° 6; Bulletin Morgand et Fatout, n°11263; Le Petit, Bibliographie des principales éditions originales, p. 253.
“We assume that this comedy published without the name of the author, was written in collaboration with Champmeslé. We often find it bound with the ‘Works’ of this latter (Paris, Ribou, 1702, 12mo); we can find it at the end of this collection, after the 5 plays by Champmeslé. Published 6 years after the representation and without the name of La Fontaine; we assumed that Champmeslé was either the author or at least the collaborator”. Tchemerzine.
This one act comedy, in verse, had been played on May 1st, 1693. It was printed only six years later and without the name of La Fontaine. However it was written by La Fontaine himself in collaboration with Champmeslé. We find it in Pièces de Théâtre de Monsieur de La Fontaine, published in The Hague by Adrien Moetjens in 1702, and in Les Œuvres de Champmeslé, published in Paris by Pierre Ribou the same year.
This play by La Fontaine is extremely rare as in the last 35 years only three copies have been listed on the public market.
Very elegant copy, finely bound by Huser in red morocco decorated with a rich 17th century-inspired pattern.
