Montaigne’s first editions have seen their value strongly increasing in the past few years. The first edition of his French translation of La Théologie naturelle by Raymond Sebond printed in 1569, was knocked down for 218 000 € on June 5th 2007 (copy preserved in decorated and restored vellum) increasing then the value of the first edition of the Essays of 1580 above one million Euros in similar condition.
Beautiful copy, wide-margined (height: 156 mm against 128 mm for the copy described by Sayce), perfectly bound in a fine binding by Cuzin in red morocco with morocco doublures.
