A fascinating historical manuscript testifying to the activity of a french gunner assistant on a warship at the end of the 18th century.
This 81-leaves manuscript was made by Sir Jean-François Icard de Saint-Tropez, who was a gunner assistant on the ship Le Lion between 1781 and 1783.

Furthermore, the work contains a very beautiful poem in 18 pages and 110 quatrains entitled “Tableau de la mer” occupying the end of the volume.
This very beautiful manuscript is decorated with numerous sketches and watercolor drawings rather naive, 25 of which are full page. They represent the ship Le Lion, Sainte-Barbe, a harbour, coats of arms, cannons or bombs, etc.
Some drawings have been modified later on, the royal crown having been overloaded with a liberty cap, the fleurs-de-lys by circles and a flag having been modified in tricolour.
