Rare account of the great carnival of 1683, during which the whole court showed itself in picturesque disguises, especially Lully as an Egyptian, the princess of Conti as queen of Egypt accompanied by Moorish slaves.

The text is attributed to Pierre Michon, known as Father Bourdelot (1610-1685).
“The general admiration for the Grand Appartement of Versailles in its finest days is expressed in the letters of Mme de Sévigné to M. de Guitaut, written in 1683. That same year, a less renowned writer brought to the public a testimony that wonderfully complements that of the marquise. An old septuagenarian scholar, Pierre Michon, known as Father Bourdelot, doctor to M. le Duc, correspondent and familiar face of Chantilly, left the most detailed account, in a familiar and piquant tone, of all that the spectacle of the court of the great king offered to a layman like him. There is no more significant document of the politeness and magnificence of this court than the ‘Relation des Assemblées faites à Versailles dans le Grand Appartement du Roy pendant le Carnaval de l’an 1683’, account addressed to the princess of Brunswick-Lunebourg, duchess of Hanover […].
The foreword explains when this opuscule which has become extremely rare was printed:
‘Il n’y a jamais eu tant de réjouissances à la Cour, qu’il s’en est vu pendant ce Carnaval à Versailles. La France, qui a été triomphante par tant de glorieuses campagnes et dont les armes formidables jettent encore la terreur dans le sein des ennemis, dès que le printemps commence, fait pendant l’hiver l’admiration de tous les peuples de la terre, par les fêtes magnifiques, magnificences et divertissements qui s’y voient… Jamais Cour royale n’a été si nombreuse, et jamais souverain ne s’est communiqué et mêlé plus familièrement avec ses sujets dans une joie publique… Il a fait depuis peu des Assemblées dans son Grand Appartement de Versailles, avec une somptuosité inouïe ; il a donné des courses de chevaux, des opéras, des comédies… » All these testimonies, at their date, are of interest.” (P. de Nolhac, Versailles résidence de Louis XIV, pp. 234-237).
