« ‘Tartarin sur les Alpes’ was published in 1885 […]. This second book is no way inferior to ‘Tartarin de Tarascon’; many people find in it a greater interest as it is more varied. It is sure that the Provencal Daudet gave way to the Parisian Daudet, who mercilessly mocks the tourists and the mountaineers, the Swiss hotel industry and who amply uses irony in the story of the young nihilist, Sonia. ». (Dictionnaire des Œuvres, VI, 342-343).
The present edition is illustrated with 16 watercolors and many vignettes in the text drawn by Aranda, De Beaumont, Montenard, De Myrbach and Rossi and engraved by Guillaume frères.
A fine copy of this major novel by Alphonse Daudet, wide-margined, preserved in its contemporary binding, with the original wrappers bound in.
